Fall Body Care: Esthetician Reveals How to Prepare Your Skin for Cooler Weather

Fall can be surprisingly hard on the skin. After months of heat, humidity, sun exposure and lightweight summer products, cooler air arrives and suddenly arms and legs can start feeling rough, tight or dry. It is a little like changing your wardrobe for fall: what kept you comfortable in July may no longer be enough in October.

A fall body care routine can help make that transition easier.

Start With a Fall Body Scrub

One of the first things people notice after summer is rough or dull-looking skin. A body scrub uses physical exfoliation to remove dead cells from the skin's surface, helping it feel smoother.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, exfoliation can make skin appear brighter by removing its outer layer of dead cells. However, exfoliation should always suit the individual's skin type. Scrubbing too aggressively can increase redness, dryness and irritation.

For a fall reset, think gentle rather than vigorous. Areas such as elbows, knees, arms and legs may benefit from exfoliation, but skin that is already irritated, cracked or particularly sensitive needs more caution.

Professional body polishing treatments work on the same basic principle.

Follow Exfoliation With Moisture

Removing dead skin is only half of the equation. Once temperatures start dropping, keeping moisture in the skin becomes increasingly important.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying moisturizer immediately after bathing, while the skin is still damp. Creams and ointments generally provide more moisture than lotions, making them useful options when skin starts becoming noticeably drier.

This is also where exfoliation and hydration can work together in a fall skin care routine. A gentle scrub addresses rough surface buildup, while moisturizing afterward helps prevent freshly exfoliated skin from simply becoming dry again.

Where Do Body Wraps Fit In?

A body wrap treatment is different from a scrub. Rather than focusing primarily on exfoliation, wraps involve applying a skincare preparation to the body and leaving it against the skin for a period of time before it is removed.

Depending on the formulation, wraps may use muds, creams or other conditioning ingredients. They can therefore complement exfoliating treatments when the goal is softer, more comfortable-feeling skin.

ESSpa's expert estheticians advise selecting body wraps and scrubs according to the condition of the skin rather than assuming every treatment suits everyone. Its current body menu includes exfoliating sugar scrubs alongside several wraps and other full-body treatments.

Don't Over-Exfoliate Dry Fall Skin

If a little exfoliation makes skin smoother, more must be better, right? Not necessarily.

Over-exfoliation can damage the skin barrier and make dryness and sensitivity worse. The AAD recommends considering skin type and existing skincare products before choosing an exfoliation method, particularly when using products that can already make skin more sensitive.

How often you use a body scrub should therefore depend on how your skin responds. Persistent stinging, redness or increased dryness are signs to ease off rather than scrub harder.

Change Your Shower Routine Too

Body treatments can help, but everyday habits still matter.

Long, steaming showers may feel perfect once Pittsburgh temperatures start dropping, but hot water can strip moisture from the skin. Dermatologists recommend warm water and limiting showers to around five to ten minutes when dealing with dry skin.

Afterward, pat rather than rub the skin dry and apply moisturizer promptly. Hands, elbows, knees and lower legs may need extra attention as the weather becomes cooler and indoor heating starts running.

Think Beyond Your Face This Fall

Seasonal skincare advice often focuses on swapping facial serums and moisturizers, while everything below the neck gets forgotten.

A useful fall body care routine is much simpler: watch for dryness, exfoliate gently when needed and follow with plenty of moisture. Professional body scrubs, polishing treatments and body wraps can also be incorporated when appropriate for the skin.

The goal is not to scrub away summer or completely overhaul your routine. It is to notice what has changed and respond accordingly. When cooler weather arrives, your body deserves the same seasonal skincare update as your face.
