Accreditation scope matters: a lab accredited for general food microbiology may not hold accreditation for HPB reference methods, AOAC Performance Tested methods, or USP microbiological chapters relevant to specific product types. Before relying on a lab's results for PCP verification, QA teams should request the lab's current accreditation scope document and confirm that the methods being used for each organism are within that scope.
Method verification documented before results are used for regulatory decisions
Where rapid methods are used instead of HPB reference methods, documented method verification, relative accuracy, relative sensitivity, specificity, should be on file for the specific matrices being tested. This verification is not a one-time exercise: it should be revisited when matrices change significantly or when the rapid method version is updated by the manufacturer. The documentation should be retrievable and clearly referenced in the COA or analytical record.

We have not had a Listeria positive in two years. Does that mean our program is working?
Absence of positives is consistent with a well-controlled facility but it can also be consistent with an under-designed program that is not sampling challenging sites at adequate frequency. An inspector reviewing a two-year zero-positive EMP record will typically ask whether sampling sites include the highest-risk locations in post-process zones, whether frequency is high enough to detect intermittent harborage, and whether the program has been challenged by any operational changes. 3. Formalize your EMP zone map and review record. If your zone map exists as institutional knowledge rather than a documented file, formalize it site locations, organism scope, frequency rationale, and the name of the responsible reviewer. Add an annual EMP design review to your program calendar with a template that captures what was evaluated and what was changed or confirmed.
4. Engage your lab partner as a scientific collaborator, not just a sample processor. The labs that generate the most value in an audit context are those whose scientists were involved in designing the testing program not just receiving samples.
