Frisco Lawn Care: Irrigation Practices To Help You Conserve Water In Summer

The grass always looks greener on the other side. In your case, it might just look greener on the other side of your neighbor’s fence. Well, they’re clearly doing something right with their lawns, aren’t they? So, what can you do? The answer is simple: read JC’s Landscaping LLC’s guide and learn how you can keep your lawn green and healthy, even with Frisco’s latest water restrictions in place! Sure, conserving water is very, very important, but with the right practices, you can do both at the same time!

Frisco's Water Efficiency Plan

As the Water Efficiency Plan was developed to conserve Frisco’s water supply and reduce annual water waste, JC’s Landscaping aims to remind you of the city’s latest restrictions as of May 2024. The “Best Management Practices” (BMPs) outlined in the plan are as follows: watering is permitted only once a week on residential trash and recycling pick-up days; no watering is allowed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until October 31; and you may use hand-held hoses, soaker hoses, drip irrigation, or bubbler systems at your discretion on any day. Fail to abide by these restrictions, and you may get slapped with a fine, which will show up on your next water bill.

Proper Watering Practices

But don’t worry! It’s still very possible to keep your lawn healthy, even in spite of all these rules. Remember, it’s not just about how you water; when you water is very important too.

According to JC’s Landscaping’s guide, the best way to keep lawns green is by watering them thoroughly but infrequently. And you only need to do this once a week! Because most grasses require just one inch of water, you only need to leave your sprinkler system on for as long as it takes to deliver that amount of water to the turf.

For the best results, you’re advised to water early in the morning, as the cooler temperatures will reduce evaporation. Aim to do this before the sun’s high in the air. If you have to wake up a little earlier to do that, well… It’s worth it for a green lawn, right?

Again, you only need to do this once, so the morning of garbage day is more than enough time for your lawn to get the water it needs.

You may be wondering, “Why not water in the evenings instead? It’s cooler, and the sun’s not out, right?” The thing is, overly moist conditions at night will promote fungal growth, so it’s better to just stick to the mornings.

Other Factors of Lawn Care

Consistent mowing will also improve drought tolerance, but JC’s Landscaping notes that you should not mow your lawn too short, as grasses that remain slightly longer will retain more moisture. Super short grass won’t cut it. Get it?

Periodic fertilization will also stimulate growth and promote good overall health, but you should refrain from applying fertilizer if the vegetation is already showing signs of heat stress. The best thing to do is to stick to a schedule from the start of the growing season, but if your grass is still green, then it’s not too late to give it a boost.

Finally, weeding should be done regularly, as this will remove competition for water and nutrients and encourage more robust growth.

Keeping the Grass Greener on Your Side

Because lawn care needs also vary by grass species, you may be looking for more specialized maintenance tips. When in doubt, just consult the experts at JC’s Landscaping for advice. And if you need a bit of that professional touch, the company also offers lawn care services that include fertilization, weed control, and irrigation maintenance to help you keep your lawn healthy throughout the summer.

After all, you won’t have to care if the grass is greener on the other side when you can keep it just as green on your side too!
